Book editing is normally quoted according to word count, manuscript condition and the editing level required. Developmental editing is a different scope from copyediting, and proofreading should usually happen after the text is otherwise final.
Developmental editing
Focuses on structure, pacing, argument, character, narrative logic and the effectiveness of the manuscript as a whole.
Copyediting
Focuses on sentence-level clarity, grammar, consistency, usage and style while retaining the author’s voice.
Proofreading
A final quality-control stage for typographical and formatting errors after editing and layout are substantially complete.
